Bushwalking in Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains offers a large range of bush walks/walking tracks for all to enjoy. From the avid bush walker with walks that take up to 10 hours to tracks for families who wish to make a 30 minute walk to a hidden lookout or open picnic area.

Some walks are wheelchair accessible, easy and suitable for all ages, medium with some stairs to the walks that are for ‘experienced walkers’ only! Visit the local tourist information centre in the Blue Mountains area for some suggestions on the walk that would most suites your abilities and what you want to see.

All the walks are different and the scenery ranges from being rich in bird life, walking past or over waterfalls and through lush green ferns, caves, canyons, towering cliffs and rain forests – not to mention the spectacular views that you may be faced with on many of the walks.

The cliff-top walks, such as the Prince Henry Cliff walk, Nature Track circuit, Overcliff Track & Darwins Walk, and visits to the many look-outs are suitable for those who prefer a flat short walk with no steep inclines and weaving in and out of canyons.

The more avid walkers will enjoy walks such as the Grand Canyon walk on Evans Lookout road, Pulpit Rock walk, the Giant Stairway, a climb down National Pass and up through the Valley of the Waters, maybe the Six Foot Track marathon or many more.

Some Historic bushwalks of a fairly 'easy' nature ranging from 1 - 2.5 hours are Lawsons Long Alley, Lockyer's Pass, Berghofer's Pass and the Old Shale Railway walk in the Hartley, Mount Victoria areas.

A few of the most popular walks:

The Three Sisters Foot Path (1km) - From Echo Point (the most popular lookout in the Blue Mountains) to the Three Sisters (one of Australia's most famous landmarks). Prepare for great views of Mt Solitary, the Jamison Valley and especially the Three Sisters then stand on one of the Sisters.

Scenic World to Echo Point (2km) - One of the most popular tourist walks in the Katoomba area, this track follows the cliffs along an extremely well-maintained and signposted track between the two popular bus drop-off points of Scenic World and Echo Point. See amazing views of the Jamison Valley and Mt Solitary before being blown away by the magnificence of the Three Sisters.

Scenic Railway to Ruined Castle (13.4km) - Following the edge of the cliffs, through the undergrowth, from the Scenic Railway to the Ruined Castle, which is a great lookout. This is a very popular full daywalk in the Katoomba Area, offering great views of the valley. Leave time to catch the train back up, or be prepared for the walk up Furber Steps an alternate exit.

Top tips for bushwalking in the Blue Mountains:

• Always take drinking water
• Wear sensible walking shoes
• Take your rubbish with you – we don’t want to litter
• Protect yourself from the sun
• Keep to the tracks – to minimize negative impact
• Know your route - and advise friends where you are going and what time to expect you back.
